The YouthMADE resource packages are now available to teachers who would like to independently teach YouthMADE in their own classroom (i.e., without the facilitators). The resource packages include 6 ‘mini-docs’ that feature the YouthMADE videos and candid interviews with the students who made them, along with custom-made lesson plans, background material, links and facilitation tips.
Taking the lead from the issues addressed in each of the youth-created videos during the first phase of YouthMADE, the video descriptions below give a sense of the content in each of the 6 modules.
For more information about these resources, or if you’d like YouthMADE to come to your school, contact Deb at ames@accesstomedia.org.
Workshop Description
Each workshop includes the screening and debriefing of one of six YouthMADE videos as well as exercises that embody and integrate the core values of the project, the “3 C’s”:
- Creativity (through an ‘arts-based’ component)
- Compassion (through exercises designed to development empathy)
- CriticalAnalysis (through the presentation of conceptual tools that encourage critical thinking and the capacity to understand the complex dynamics of privilege and power)

YouthMADE Workshop Modules:
1. “I Am Here”: Colonial Matters
A central aspect of the prevalence of racism in BC is the on-going segregation (albeit informal) between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations, particularly in rural British Columbia, and yet very few educational resources address those issues. This module candidly explores these issues and attempts to shed some light on the rural dimension of racism in BC and how it interacts with more urban manifestations of it.
Featuring “I Am Here”, a powerful, poetic and haunting exploration of Aboriginal cultural genocide, this module also explores a range of issues from residential schools and internalized racism to high attrition and substance abuse rates among Aboriginal youth (in both rural and urban settings).
Looking back in order to move forward, this module is ultimately a meditation on hope–challenging and inspiring us to reflect on holistic approaches to healing intergenerational trauma and the mistrust that can exist between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples in BC.

2. “The Perfect Immigrant”: Migrant Matters
Canada’s status as ‘Mosaic’ is debated as real stories of immigration are contrasted with an animated satire about what ‘officials’ might deem to be the “Perfect Immigrant”. This module also explores the impact that immigration can have on intergenerational relationships.

3.“Keeping it Real”: Media Literacy Matters
Built around “Keeping it Real”, an animation about being consumed by ‘media demons’, this module explores constructions of beauty and race and the role of the extended family in helping us to stay ‘real’.

5. “The Canvas”: Discriminatory Matters
Centred around “The Canvas”, which portrays an escalating series of discriminatory acts from social exclusion to violent hate, this module encourages students to identify and discuss different types of discrimination and role-play possible interventions. Building the capacity of students’ to become ‘active witnesses’, this module also prompts students to think about the roles and responsibilities of the ally.
