Suck My Patriarchy

Premier of "Suck my Patriarchy" Feb. 14th

"by buying into the whole notion of romantic love you're sacrificing your
independence and identities to support an oppressive political ideology
reinforcing gender role stereotyping - requiring women be demure and
submissive while men be assertive and dominant. now have a lovely evening celebrating a day that is an institutionalized reminder of your enslavement to the patriarchy. i pity you."

has a much better ring than "happy valentine's day," don't you think?

but really folks...urban outreach is having a fundraiser and premiering a "Get the Word Out" film created by the Anti-Patti group on the 14th of feb. "Suck my Patriarchy" is a film that examines patriarchy, sexism, and rape in our society - both in its overt and subtle forms. These issues are so pervasive in our world, even in activist communities, but are rarely addressed because they've become so normalized. Through an anti- oppressive and consensus-based decision-making process, the members of Anti-patti produced a hard-hitting art piece that blows the issue wide open.

Get the Word Out is an innovative new program that helps non-profit organizations "get the word out" about their causes while providing hands-on media production experience to multi-barriered youth who want a future in filmmaking.

who are the filmakers of " Suck my Patriarchy" ?

There were four of us - Sharai, Laschen, Loretto, and Brian. Some radical kids from East Van. Part III is starting up soon and they may need participants, if you're interested.

"A serious anarchism must also be feminist otherwise it is a question of patriarchal half-anarchism and not real anarchism. It is the task of the anarcha-feminists to secure the feminist feature in anarchism. There will be no anarchism without feminism. An essential point in anarcha-feminism is that the changes must begin today, not tomorrow or after the revolution. The revolution shall be permanent. We must start today by seeing through the oppression in the daily life and do
something to break the pattern here and now."
from Anarchafeminist Manifesto http://www.powertech.no/anarchy/maf.html

We already know all men are sexist. Just as all white people are racist because of our society, white people still having privilege over people of colour and men still have privilege over wimmin, and once born into this process its incredibly hard to break it, especially when you forget to look at yourself. Once men slap "REVOLUTIONARY" on themselves, they think once they know a problem exists, that they are no longer a part of that problem, which they are."

Patriarchy is often bandied about as a term to explain men's prejudices or/and behaviour toward women. But just as the behaviour and attitudes of a boss towards a worker is not the intrinsic problem of capitalism but rather an expression of it, so gender relations are some of the symptoms of the cultural, economic, social and ideological system of oppression, exploitation and power - Patriarchy.

let's keep this discussion going! what are people's experiences? how does patriarchy play out in your life?

hi.
If anyone wants to create a clickable link in their comment you just have to add some html, like so (and it includes the brackets and quotations and everything, and don't forget http:// if it is in the URL)

<a href="paste your url into here">this is a link to click on</a>

Here's an example: Info-shop.org's anarcho-feminism site.

femminism sux too....the history of teh feminist movement was as much about keepin people and womin of color out of teh white ladies way...children first... keep love inour hearts ... and peace in our conviction...

Posted by: randy on February 8, 2003 09:27 PM

I wouldn't say that feminism sucks, just that early on, it was definitely the domain of privaleged middle-class wimmin. There's been a lot of awakening to that within the feminist movement though. I think that the movement to end sexual oppression needs to include both men and wimmin forsure. Without all of us unlearning patriarchy the same patterns will continue to resurface - be it in relationships, within an environmental movement, or between anarchists. Too many of my female friends and family members have been hurt by patriarchy, and to a lesser extent, so have I. We gotta work together to end this bullshit.

oh, it's too bad i didn't hear about your juice issue earlier. i have a contact at cydonia. it's not happy planet, but it's close. probably too late now. i guess carbonated sugarwater will have to do. still glad it's coming along and that you're excited. i've done my teensy bit of promo so hopefully lots of people will show up and lots of funds will be generated.

Posted by: jf on February 13, 2003 02:28 AM

thanks jf for your support...i'm not sure if everyone knows that it's a non-alcoholic event..but it is. Video In can't get liquor licences anymore so we are going to have to rely on the video and our sparkling personalities to entertain… however, after there is "the people's prom" at the church and they got storm…lot's of storm…

Posted by: hayley on February 13, 2003 04:31 AM

well, the event is only two hours long, so that wouldn't have provided much time for people to get a buzz on anyways. while a bit of booze might help some people be less inhibited about asking questions of the panel, those questions might become much stupider.
besides, booze can be debatably considered a patriarchal drug. alcohol is a contributing factor in huge numbers (don't remember exact stats) of cases of domestic assault, date rape and other nasty, dehumanizing things men do.
further, if you want to get into some dubious anthropology, fermented grain beverages became the drug of choice only after humans switched from a nomadic lifestyle to an agrarian one. in those early nomadic cultures, women, whose work gathering edible plants provided the vast majority of the tribe's diet, were seen as equal, if not superior, to men, who would hunt but were often unsuccessful at it. the nomadic lifestyle was not terribly safe or secure, so women would have multiple sex partners so that many men, unsure if they were the father, would have a vested interest in co-parenting her children even if the real father got trampled to death by an antelope. if these tribes took drugs at all, they were plant based ones, not alcohol.
only when we began farming did the idea of the housewife emerge. she stayed at home raising male children to tend the land with their father while her female children were married off as soon as possible so as to be less of a burden on the household resources. the female role had changed from an active, public one to a passive, private one. unlike the plant based drugs that, more often than not, would make one paranoid, self-conscious and questioning of one's purpose and worth, alcohol shuts off higher cerebral functioning, removing self-doubt and increasing one's sense of self-worth to grandiose proportions. such a state of intoxication, pursued regularly, would allow early farmers to feel unquestioningly confident that a patriarchal society was simply as things were meant to be.

so, yeah, it would be contrary to the theme to serve alcohol anyways. alcohol is the elixir of the patriarchy! no reason not to get blotto afterwards though. oh wait. i do have a reason. working at 6:30am the next day *sigh*

yay, it's tonight! tell your friends! guys, it's the perfect start to an enchanted valentine's day date with that special radical feminist in your life. gals, it's the perfect opportunity to ask out that creepy mysoginist who's always hitting you. take him to this and make him feel deeply, deeply ashamed.

Posted by: jf on February 14, 2003 02:33 PM

the above should read "hitting *on* you" not "hitting you".. must proofread my comments. that sounded totally bad.

If you actually take the time to read the words you type.... you will find that the words you use are NO different from any other biased perspective ever conceive by humans... I find it hilarious that the most militant activists(of any kind) fight injustice caused by oversimplifying the problems and scapegoating with just that.... Black hat/ white hat stupidity...with a dash of superiority thrown in... sorry, you are becoming the monster you wish to erradicate.

Posted by: scott gallant on September 18, 2003 04:43 PM

* this was me taking the time to re-read this thread.* hmmmm ...

now, i have thought long and hard about how giving marginalize communities a new forum to express themselfs and how utilizing the skills of consensus makes us "just like our enemy" i heard that bush is doing the same thing and that the facist party is now having rotating facilatators and free sandwiches at break. *smirk*

i have read what was written about taking the issues of sexism, rape and domination, how the partipants take all of those experiances and explain an over-arching structure known as patriarchy. i fail to see anything being simpified. i see a dedication to exposing the actual power structure and not simply ending the struggle with analizing human interactions. Also, that personal relationships can be dynamic and revolutionary. ......*s*

you know what i find hilarious? when someone closes thier eyes and ears so much that they miss the chance to learn from folks who actauly have something to say.
